Health & Safety
Safety is paramount in Kelt’s culture. We are committed to safe and environmentally responsible operations for the benefit of our employees, contractors and the communities we work in. We reinforce our commitment through the promotion and support of a safety culture in which all workers are involved. High safety standards ensure that all employees and contractors are protected from any incident or injury and arrive home safely at the end of each day.
We have established effective policies, systems and procedures to ensure Kelt takes all reasonable care by avoiding, minimizing and/or eliminating any negative consequences to the environment. This means that a high standard of awareness and decisive, prompt, and continuing actions are taken to maintain and enhance the environmental quality of life for future generations. All daily operations comply with regulatory requirements and environmental protection legislation set out by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and the British Columbia Oil and Gas Commission (BCOGC).
Kelt strives to achieve superior performance and continuous improvement. We maintain a Health, Safety and Environment committee within our Board of Directors to oversee the implementation of these policies, systems and procedures. We are constantly working towards new goals, commitments and bettering the community in which we work. The board meets periodically to review health, safety, and environmental matters.
Policy & Process
Kelt regularly monitors and audits its operations and facilities to identify any adverse impacts on the environment or community. Several systems and policies have been put in place to ensure proper training and orientation is conducted for all employees and contractors. As a joint effort by Kelt and its employees, adequate training is provided in all areas relevant to Kelt’s duties and responsibilities to maintain and enhance the environmental quality of life. Systems are maintained to manage internal audits, vendor management and competency of Kelt’s operations, both inside and outside of the organization.
Kelt’s Asset Integrity Management program focuses on the safety and integrity required for the construction, maintenance and ongoing operations of all facilities. The focus of these programs are to manage risk by providing inspection procedures, proper inspection intervals, monitoring programs and integration of appropriate inspection technology. Kelt is diligent in ensuring that the safety and integrity of all pipeline and facility assets are maintained to a high standard. We have developed a robust quality management system (Corporate Owner User Program) registered with the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA). In addition, we have an aggressive Pipeline Integrity Program which has been audited by both the AER and the BCOGC. Kelt also has a Safety and Loss Management System (SLMS) which is an initiative to ensure we are measuring our successes and challenges, along with meeting or exceeding our corporate goals.
Emergency Response Management
Kelt is focused on developing and maintaining quality Emergency Response Plans (ERP) and ensures that the emergency response procedures are consistent across the company. The objective of this program is to save lives, implement protective actions, and restore operations. The manuals are updated annually to confirm all information is accurate and compliant. All personnel are trained to properly activate ERP’s in the event of an unlikely emergency. All affected workers must be made aware of response plans and be familiar with their role, responsibilities and procedures as outlined in these plans. Protecting the public, our employees, and the environment is of utmost importance to Kelt.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement
Kelt believes that engaging our diverse stakeholders in long term dialogue provides important information, as well as creates positive partnerships and relationships that help to continuously improve our decision making capability and business. Kelt has operations in both Alberta and British Columbia, in which each province has a unique set of Landowners, First Nations Bands and Governments. Kelt recognizes the differences and individuality that each Province has and tailors their support and engagement in ways that will have a positive impact on their communities. Kelt is responsive to the environmental and economic needs of the communities in which we operate. Kelt is committed to learning their values and priorities, while collaborating with the communities in a respectful manner. This assists us in finding new and innovative ways to resolve concerns due to our operations and is an important component to our business. This approach helps us achieve far greater positive outcomes, and in turn allows us to understand the challenges we all face. It strengthens the fabric of our communities so that we can prosper together.
Kelt is also finding ways to give back to the community in the form of funding or employment opportunities and believes in giving back to the community in meaningful ways. Kelt has contributed to a number of projects. Most recently, we have contributed to the construction of a sports arena in one of our core areas of operation. We also provide funding for First Nations Culture Camps and families living in poverty or with addiction. Kelt strongly believes in the importance of maintaining healthy communities. We also understand that addressing the interests of the communities where we operate is critical to maintaining a sustainable business.
